CONSULTATION SKILLS COURSE
(20 CATS points, University Level 3)

Our course is an introduction to the skills used in a medical or nurse consultation. It is taught by the distance learning techniques used in our other courses and like them it is down-to-earth and immensely practical. It will help you to manage a consultation by showing you what to expect and how to manage the unexpected.

Who can take the course?

Any nurse can take it. The course is of value not only to those wishing to start consulting or to improve their consulting skills, but also to anyone wishing to improve their professional or personal development. It gives real insight into the consulting process.

What does the course cover?

The course covers the way people behave in a consultation, what motivates them and why they behave the way they do. It helps you to assess a patient and deal with their problems. It does not cover clinical diagnosis or prescribing because the consultation is about more than these, it is a process in itself which can be managed to provide reassurance and treatment for patients in many situations. It can therefore be used as an adjunct to other courses which do not cover these areas or as a guide to the consultation process for those who feel they may be interested in becoming involved in consulting.

Why is the course important?

Not every consultation ends in the issue of a prescription - in fact a great many don't. It is possible to actively use the consultation itself to achieve a result, and that is what this course uniquely teaches.

Who are your Tutors?

The course has been devised and tutored by Alice Muir and Ken Hambly, who has thirty years experience consulting in the British NHS.
