How are courses assessed?
Our distance learning courses all have assignments or progress
reports to be completed and sent to us for marking or for feedback.
These are usually short answer type, taking around 1-3 hours to
complete. You can submit these by post or e-mail. Some courses include
case study and client diary assessments (Prospectus has full details
- ask us to send you one by post or e-mail - see Contact Us page).
Can I study by distance learning?
The courses described in this website are all completely distance
learning. They range in length, and the course details are based
on you spending around 2 hours per week on your course. A 2-week
break is built in over Christmas and 1 week for Easter. However,
flexible learning means that you can work through your course over
a shorter period, if you have more time available each week, or
take more time if you need it. You can also take time off for holiday
periods if necessary. Simply give full details when you enrol. There
is no need to have access to a library or other materials unless
you are taking Course 800, 900 or 450. You don't need to use a computer,
but you can if you prefer. Your home study will involve a range
of activities such as reading, listening to an audio-cassette, trying
out relaxation and breathing techniques, working on case studies,
and talking to your tutor or other students on the phone or by e-mail.
Do you provide in-house or off-site training?
Yes. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
Can I take more or less time on a course if I need to?

Stress Advisor Courses
What is a Stress Adviser?
A Stress Adviser is a person who has been trained by Stress Education
Services to provide one-to-one treatment for stressed individuals
wherever they present. Stress Advisers work through a series of
sessions with a patient, using accepted stress management techniques
based on cognitive behaviour therapy. A relaxation audio cassette
and appropriate copyright literature is given to the patient at
appropriate stages of the treatment which would normally last for
five or six sessions of varying length.
Who can train to be a Stress Adviser?
Stress Adviser Training can be undertaken by anyone with at least
6 months experience working with the public in a supportive context,
though you may need to take one of our other courses first. For
full details see our range of Certificate
Courses in Stress Advice.
How can Stress Advice be used?
Stress Advice can be used to help anyone who is stressed. So
Stress Advisers can work in primary care, occupational health, the
police force, armed services, industry, schools, the NHS, local
authorities, private sector, universities, colleges, in private
practice, and so on.
What is the difference between Course 200 and 300 ?
Course 200 is aimed at nurses working in primary care such as
practice nurses and health visitors, and has case study work and
examples suited to that area of work. Course 300 is a more general
Stress Adviser course suitable for training staff working in all
other contexts.
Why are there different versions of the Stress Adviser course?
Different versions have been produced to best meet the varied
needs of our students, and the many ways in which Stress Advice
can be used. All Stress Adviser courses allow the student to be
registered with us as a Stress Adviser.

Consultation Skills Course
Who can do the Consultation Skills Course?
The course is open to qualified nurses in general, but particularly
those in primary care or occupational health who do consultations
as part of their job.
What previous experience do I need?
You do not need any previous experience of consulting, but experience
of general nursing would be an advantage.
Can I get PREP points on completion of the course?
The course has been accredited by Glasgow Caledonian University and
so should also qualify for PREP points.
Will I be qualified to consult when I pass this course?
There is no qualification for consulting which all doctors and
nurses do some of the time. This course gives you insight into the
process and advice and help for those who perform a consulting role,
or intend to do so.
Will I be able to prescribe on completion of the course?
The course is not intended to be a prescribing course, it is
about the consultation process and teaches you how you conduct a
consultation. It is thus an addition to other university taught
courses and is intended to enhance your personal and professional
development.
Can doctors do this course?
The course has been written for nurses, but doctors, particularly
those new to the UK National Health Service style of consultation,
will find it useful.
Does the course cover telephone consultations?
There is a section in the course specifically about telephone
consultations, but the course in general will benefit anyone who
is in the position of dealing with patients on the telephone.
Will the course be useful in my current work?
The course is intended to be of interest to anyone working in
a clinical situation as it gives insight into a difficult and important
area of medical and nursing practice. It will help you to develop
your own philosophy about the way you deal with patients.
Who has written the course?
The Consultation Skills course has been written by Dr. Ken Hambly,
a doctor and writer with thirty years of consulting experience,
and by Alice Muir, a psychologist and experienced trainer. They
have developed and produced many ethical distance learning courses
in the past which have been completed by hundreds of satisfied students.
